Titanfall - Titanfall is a first person shooter for Windows, Xbox 360 and Xbox One that pushes the genre into a different direction by introducing large mechanical machines into the combat environment. With plenty of variety in the gameplay this 2014 addition to the FPS genre sets a new standard. In Titanfall players have the option to roam the map on foot or jump into a mechanical fighter known as a Titan. Every Titanfall match pits teams of two players against each other as they battle to complete various team based objectives with various weapons and Titans at their disposal. The game is all about the fast paced experience and lets players quickly move around the map and even throws in some parkour style features as players run on walls, double jump and gain speed quickly as they sprint forward onto battle. Titans are also very fast and only slightly slower than players outside of the mechanical giants. Players won’t just be battling other players though and instead be joined on the battlefield by plenty of AI controlled soldiers. This ensures that when you do get to hop into your Titan that you have plenty of enemies to mow down for a satisfying experience but doesn’t leave countless players on the other side becoming frustrated. It’s a balance that means you’ll have less volatility in the online experience and results in a generally more enjoyable offering. With plenty of abilities to give you a tactical edge in Titanfall players have plenty of room to customise their pilot’s abilities and weapons. Abilities include cloaking, speed boosts and even x-ray vision while weapons are a mostly standard offering with assault rifles, machin guns, sniper rifles and plenty of anti-Titan weapons. Titans have a similar level of customisation to ensure that all play styles can create something that they feel comfortable with. Titans are split into three classes (light, medium and heavy) which change the level of armour and speed available to each one. The real customisation comes from the Titan’s powers though from the ability to stop enemy bullets midair to blocking all damage with a temporary shield and many others. Titanfall redefines the first person shooter genre to create an experience that any fan of multiplayer shooters will instantly become hooked on.

Block N Load - Block N Load blends sandbox with the class based shooter to create a strategic 5 on 5 FPS where you’ll get to remake the environment to meet your needs while also playing as a host of colourful characters. Gameplay in Block N Load is split into two distinct game phases; the build phase and then the attack phase. During the first of these players are given several minutes to plan out their defences which need to be centred around your 3 base cubes which need to be protected from the enemy 5 person team. This means building structures out of the various game blocks and combining them with utility blocks like glue, respawn pads, health stations, land mines, bear traps, plasma mines and turrets. With some of these blocks being class specific a balanced team is your best bet to ensure balanced defence. Blocks aren’t just defensively minded though and once the game switches to the shooting phase you’ll find them just useful. Aggressive blocks include bombs, C4, speed pads and bounce pads. All of these blocks have a different block cost with more advanced items costing significantly more blocks to keep things balanced. The builders behind the blocks are just as important in Block N Load though with a hero list of over a dozen. Using a typical freemium setup of rotating free characters, permanent unlocks through in game currency and paid skins all players can engage the range of heroes. Said heroes each come with a primary and secondary weapon that supports their playstyle (assault, defence, area control, support) and a unique block. Additionally a primary and passive skill can really separate you from other players with skills such as the ability to climb walls, heal allies, fear enemies, gaining shields for kills and many more. Block N Load ensures a wealth of fun and is particularly effective when played in a pre-made group of 5 which ensures more consistent planning. Those without ample numbers though will still find they can win or lose games on their own merits due to the small size of players in each match.

Battlefield 3 - Battlefield 3 is a FPS produced by Electronic Arts (EA) and pushes the Battlefield series further than ever before. The games focus is similar to previous instalments in the franchise with a focus on large scale multiplayer battles. Battlefield 3 was released in late 2011 and met with great reviews from critics and fans of the series citing graphics and multiplayer features as the core reasons for high scores. In Battlefield 3 players will experience a vast single player campaign with options to tackle missions in a co-operative manner or take to the multiplayer game mode. The PC version of Battlefield 3 supports battles for up to 64 players while the console versions offer slightly lower player caps and map restrictions to accommodate the change. Multiplayer features a wide variety of real world locations for players to battle over including New York, Paris, Kuwait and many others.
