Far Sky - Would you be able to survive if your submarine crashed into the bottom of the ocean? Far Sky poses this challenge on you as you explore the ocean depths and attempt to rebuild your craft while staying alive. Starting out with nothing but some basic supplies and a simple base on the ocean floor you’ll have to beat the odds by exploring, extracting, gathering, hunting and constructing. In addition to this story based adventure players can also enjoy a sandbox game mode where you can do anything with all the tools that Far Sky has to offer. Managing the most important needs (namely hunger and oxygen) is key to long term success as you build out your underwater base. Hunger is satisfied by cooking fish that you kill out in the ocean or plants that you grow inside your base. On the other hand your oxygen supply is limited when leaving your home but can be upgraded to increase your available exploration range. To help with the exploration side of gameplay Far Sky is kind enough to provide a helpful map that will point out your submarine pieces and resource fields (such as coal or iron). It also serves an important secondary feature though of keeping you coordinated as it is easy to get lost amidst all the ocean valleys. While it’s easy to enjoy the exploration of Far Sky thanks to all the living creatures swimming around you players must never forget the primary purpose of exploring the ocean floor which is to collect necessary resources. Ultimately these resources become items for your base, weapons to defend yourself or extractors to improve your resource farming ability. These extractors are a nice touch to the game and will automatically extract resources for you when placed on a resource area and means less resource collecting which is good due to how dangerous it can be (especially at night when enemies become more plentiful and aggressive). Enemies include sharks, jellyfish and barracuda who are attracted to rapid movements or blood left in the water from you killing sea creatures with your spear gun. While Far Sky is a great survival game with a setting you wouldn’t have seen before the lack of depth keeps it from something you’ll play again and again like Minecraft or a similar sandbox games. The minimal number of items to build and very straight forward enemy AI in particular keep it to a single playthrough adventure.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 - Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is the 2010 game release in the Battlefield series. The game continues on the success laid out by the previous games in the series which its focus on a squad based experience. One of the most innovative additions to the game is the use of destructible environments which are found in both the single player and multiplayer modes. The game is generally considered to be one of the better multiplayer first person shooters of the day. In the single player story you will play as Preston Marlowe as you join his team of soldiers in the Bad Company battalion once again. This campaign mode in Bad Company 2 plays out like similar games with the players chasing a series of objectives in different settings with a mixture of cut scenes to fill in the story blanks. For nearly all the missions players will be joined by their team but the responsibility definitely falls on the player as your team is less than helpful in most situations. Bad Company 2 also jumped onto the regenerating health system that many other games of the time introduced. The campaign does use a few interesting mechanics such as weapon unlocking with most weapons requiring to be found in the campaign before becoming accessible at supply points. These supply points are dropped onto the player at certain game points where you can swap out your weapon options and fill up on ammunition. Multiplayer is your standard class based affair with players able to pick from one of four classes that carry their own weapons and equipment. These classes gain experience and levels separately which allows you to enhance your gear further. Vehicles are also an important game component just like the previous Battlefield games. Bad Company 2 manages to be a great single player experience but shines in the multiplayer environment just like the others in the franchise.

Block N Load - Block N Load blends sandbox with the class based shooter to create a strategic 5 on 5 FPS where you’ll get to remake the environment to meet your needs while also playing as a host of colourful characters. Gameplay in Block N Load is split into two distinct game phases; the build phase and then the attack phase. During the first of these players are given several minutes to plan out their defences which need to be centred around your 3 base cubes which need to be protected from the enemy 5 person team. This means building structures out of the various game blocks and combining them with utility blocks like glue, respawn pads, health stations, land mines, bear traps, plasma mines and turrets. With some of these blocks being class specific a balanced team is your best bet to ensure balanced defence. Blocks aren’t just defensively minded though and once the game switches to the shooting phase you’ll find them just useful. Aggressive blocks include bombs, C4, speed pads and bounce pads. All of these blocks have a different block cost with more advanced items costing significantly more blocks to keep things balanced. The builders behind the blocks are just as important in Block N Load though with a hero list of over a dozen. Using a typical freemium setup of rotating free characters, permanent unlocks through in game currency and paid skins all players can engage the range of heroes. Said heroes each come with a primary and secondary weapon that supports their playstyle (assault, defence, area control, support) and a unique block. Additionally a primary and passive skill can really separate you from other players with skills such as the ability to climb walls, heal allies, fear enemies, gaining shields for kills and many more. Block N Load ensures a wealth of fun and is particularly effective when played in a pre-made group of 5 which ensures more consistent planning. Those without ample numbers though will still find they can win or lose games on their own merits due to the small size of players in each match.
