The objective of the game is to control and move a snake (or a worm to most players) around a colored area, eat pellets to gain mass, defeat and consume other players to grow the biggest and longest in the game. If the player's snake's head collides into a part of another snake, the player loses the game and must start over. The defeated avatar's body turns into bright, shining pellets for other players to consume. These pellets that remain from "death" of an avatar will correspond to the color of the avatar itself. Pellets also spawn from other snake avatars. By pressing the space bar or clicking the mouse, the player can activate "boost mode", which causes the avatar to speed up. To activate "boost mode", either click down on your mouse or trackpad or press your "space" key. When a player does use "boost mode", the snake loses mass causing the snake's size to shrink slightly. The mass that is lost from the boost appears as a line of dots where the boost was used. This feature is useful to outmaneuver and defeat opponents. The drawback is that the avatar will lose some length while being speed-boosted.

Far Sky poses this challenge on you as you explore the ocean depths and attempt to rebuild your craft while staying alive. Starting out with nothing but some basic supplies and a simple base on the ocean floor you’ll have to beat the odds by exploring, extracting, gathering, hunting and constructing. To help with the exploration side of gameplay Far Sky is kind enough to provide a helpful map that will point out your submarine pieces and resource fields (such as coal or iron). It also serves an important secondary feature though of keeping you coordinated as it is easy to get lost amidst all the ocean valleys. While it’s easy to enjoy the exploration of Far Sky thanks to all the living creatures swimming around you players must never forget the primary purpose of exploring the ocean floor which is to collect necessary resources. Ultimately these resources become items for your base, weapons to defend yourself or extractors to improve your resource farming ability. These extractors are a nice touch to the game and will automatically extract resources for you when placed on a resource area and means less resource collecting which is good due to how dangerous it can be (especially at night when enemies become more plentiful and aggressive). Enemies include sharks, jellyfish and barracuda who are attracted to rapid movements or blood left in the water from you killing sea creatures with your spear gun. While Far Sky is a great survival game with a setting you wouldn’t have seen before the lack of depth keeps it from something you’ll play again and again like Minecraft or a similar sandbox games. The minimal number of items to build and very straight forward enemy AI in particular keep it to a single playthrough adventure.

Terasology - Terasology is a beautiful open source game that combines sandbox style gameplay with other genres. The game is still in the midst of development but already looks amazing and has some very unique ideas for the genre. If you want a free game that offers a very similar experience to what Minecraft has to offer or want to contribute to your own block building adventure behind the scenes, then Terasology might just be what you are after. The number of active participants varies from time to time but there are about a dozen users working on the project in an ongoing manner with options for you to contribute smaller parts always available. The vision for the game is to eventually combine some management based features similar to that of Dwarf Fortress and even Dungeon Keeper. The game is still a fair way away from that point as of this review but still is an impressive experience. In the current state of the game you can edit the game world by destroying and placing the various game blocks or spend your time blowing them up with the ray gun available in the game. You can also simply enjoy the experience with breathtaking water visuals, lighting effects (when you are holding a torch) and shadows that change with the position of the sun. This planned gameplay will have you building your own ultimate fortress (hopefully on top of a nice hill) and managing your own minions as they protect you by fighting off various baddies in the game. NPCs will also be thrown into the mix in some capacity although final details are still unknown. Other notable features that may (or may not) eventually be added also include tech trees, advanced crafting, a rich alive game world and portals. The game has slowly built up a great following that you can become a part of either just to play the game or contribute to a game that will definitely be something special.
